The Young Artist Showcase (YAS) is one of the Frederick Symphony Orchestra's (FSO) many music education programs. Open to advanced middle and high school instrumentalists who reside in Maryland and the surrounding areas of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, the Showcase is being underwritten by generous individual and corporate sponsorships. Eligible musicians who play string, brass, woodwind, percussion, or piano are invited to participate. All accepted entrants will compete in the Showcase competition on February 10, 2018. A maximum of five contestants will be chosen, and they will then compete in a Winner’s Circle Recital on March 4, 2018.

Saturday, February 10, 2018 Exact competition time and location will be provided to entrants no later than 10 days before the competition date. The First Round is closed to the public. Five competitors chosen for the Final Recital Round will be announced no later than Monday, February 13, 2018.
Sunday, March 4, 2018 Five finalists will perform in the Winner's Circle Recital, performing their same repertoire as the First Round. The Final Recital Round is open to the public.
Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Frederick Community College. The Grand Prize Winner will perform as a guest soloist.
Entrants are required to perform two contrasting movements from a concerto or major work of their instrument’s standard orchestral repertoire. Memorization is preferred, but not required. Entrants will be allotted a maximum of twenty (20) minutes to perform their repertoire. Entrants are responsible for providing a total of two publisher-printed originals of their music with measures numbered: one will be for the use of the Entrant’s piano accompanist, and the second is for the use of the Competition Judges. The judges’ original music will be presented to them at the competition. Photocopies will not be accepted and will result in disqualification. All repertoire is accepted subject to the availability of the orchestral parts. The Frederick Symphony Orchestra shall not incur any cost above $500 to obtain concert accompaniment music. Should the winning entrant choose a concerto with accompaniment parts that exceed the $500, he/she shall be responsible for the excess cost of acquiring the orchestral accompaniment. Entrants are responsible for researching prices and/or the availability of orchestral parts. Any vendor of the Entrants’ choosing may be used.
Entry forms must be received by the Frederick Symphony Orchestra by noon on Friday, January 5, 2018, and include the entrance fee of $50. Late or incomplete forms will not be accepted. The first 15 received entries will be guaranteed participation in the Competition. Additional entrants will be eligible to compete as scheduling permits during the First Round.
