The Frederick Symphony Orchestra is performing Romanian Rainbow in Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at Frederick Community College on May 6, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

During this concert, the FSO will be showcasing the talents of the 2017 Young Artist Competition winner, Sarah Kim. Prior to intermission, the Centennial High School senior will play American composer Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto in G Major, Op. 14.

“I am so honored to play with the Frederick Symphony,” she said.

“[Barber’s] Violin Concerto has a very special place in my heart, and I am elated to be able to play this with a fantastic ensemble. I met [Maestro Glenn] Quader, [Associate Conductor Andrew] Rosenfeld, and Concertmaster [Alyssa] Boxhill and the competition, and I am very excited to work with such great people.”

Kim is a member of the Pre-Conservatory Violin Program at Peabody Preparatory at Johns Hopkins University, where she received the Peabody Preparatory Dean’s Recognition Achievement Award in violin and piano.

She has performed as a soloist with the Columbia Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra for three years after winning the annual Concerto Competition in 2013, 2014, and 2015. She also won the following competitions:

She’s taken masterclasses with world-renowned professors like Martin Beaver, Donald Weilerstein, and Richard Wernick and performed in Argentina and Scotland as well as California, New York, North Carolina, Illinois, and Washington, D.C.

She is also the concertmaster of the Peabody Youth Orchestra after a stint as concertmaster of the Preparatory Young Artists Orchestra.

“Sarah Kim is an incredible violinist,” said Quader, “We look forward to sharing the stage with her in May.”

Romanian Rainbow will be conducted by Quader and include performances of Romanian native George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A Major, Op. 11 and Rainbow Body by American composer Christopher Theofanidis.

It will also feature Associate Conductor Andrew Rosenfeld and the Frederick Camerata performing Dances of Transylvania and Romanian Folk Dances by Romanian native Béla Bartók.
