In today’s society, celebrities have more status, fame, and fortune than ever. From actors and musicians to social media stars and athletes, practically anyone can become famous, thanks to the Internet. However, the secret to remaining a relevant celebrity is to stay talented. No matter the time or technology, people can’t knock genuine talent, especially musical talent. Here are some of our favorite celebrities, old and young, who play instruments on top of their most notable talent:
- Adrien Brody: To prepare for his title role as Polish pianist and composer Wladyslaw Szpilman, the actor spent hours studying piano movements and Frederic Chopin’s compositions. It paid off when he became the youngest Best Actor Oscar winner ever.
- Alyssa Milano: The Melrose Place mainstay took playing the recorder in elementary school to a whole new level. She eventually perfected the flute before she began acting.
- Chloe Grace Moretz: The up-and-coming starlet has played numerous leading roles in movies such as “Hugo,” “500 Days of Summer,” and “The 5th Wave.” However, it was her cello performance in “If I Stay” that really stole the show.
- Clint Eastwood: Before pursuing a career in acting, Eastwood became an accomplished pianist and composer. He created the film scores for several of the movies he directed, including “Million Dollar Baby,” “Mystic River,” “Changeling,” and “Hereafter.” Talk about talent.
- Condoleezza Rice: The former U.S. Secretary of State had dreams of being a concert pianist. This inspiring woman performed with the Denver Symphony Orchestra at 15 years old, accompanied renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 2002, and played for Queen Elizabeth II.
- Emily Blunt: The beautiful actress was already an accomplished cellist before she hit Hollywood, and she got to show off her musical chops in “My Summer of Love.”
- Hugh Laurie: House is more than an actor. The Oxford native plays piano, guitar, drums, harmonica, and saxophone. He also sings and has released two blues and jazz albums since 2010.
- Jennifer Garner: Surprisingly, the “Elektra” star was a saxophone player in high school. Though she’s admitted she lost her musical talent, she “was proud of [playing the saxophone],” according to People.
- Johnny Depp: Prior to “Pirates of the Caribbean” fame, Depp played acoustic guitar for the soundtracks of “Chocolat” and “Once Upon a Time In Mexico.” He’s also performed in numerous awards shows, but no word on if Captain Jack made an appearance.
- Julie Roberts: Before she stole America’s heart in “Pretty Woman,” Roberts was secretly practicing her oboe in her childhood home.
- Keanu Reeves: “The Matrix” star was also a member of an alternative rock group called Dogstar from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. He played bass guitar and sang backup vocals.
- Matt Damon: For his role in “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” the typically action-studded star toned it down for a scene as he nailed singing My Funny Valentine alongside saxophone-playing Jude Law.
- Miles Teller: One of the most underrated young actors today, Teller hardly knew how to play the drums before his starring role in “Whiplash.” After a crash course, Teller’s musical talent is undeniably hypnotizing.
- Rainn Wilson: Only diehard “The Office” fans might know this, but the actor also plays the piano, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, drums, bassoon, xylophone, and baritone.
- Richard Gere: A trumpet standout in high school, the actor played his own solos in “The Cotton Club.” He also sang for his role in “Chicago,” which really gave viewers the old razzle dazzle.
- Ryan Gosling: As if Hollywood’s golden boy couldn’t get more talented, Gosling’s also known for forming an indie rock band where he sings and plays piano, guitar, bass guitar, and cello.
- Steve Martin: “Cheaper by the Dozen” has nothing on the actor’s banjo skills. Martin won a Grammy in 2002 for Best Country Instrumental Performance after his rendition of Earl Scrugg’s “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” He’s even played in Carnegie Hall with a bluegrass band.
These 18 actors are more than meets the eye on camera. From playing woodwind instruments to dominating the keys of a piano, these talents are sure to stand the test of time and technology due to their many musical talents.
