The Frederick Symphony Orchestra is about 1 month away from our first concert of our 20th Anniversary season, and we couldn’t be more excited. In fact, we’re so thrilled that we’re giving readers a sneak preview of the entire season before you get the playbill. Without further adieu, read on to discover the glorious sounds of the Symphony you will hear this year:
España!
To kick off our 20th Anniversary season, we will dive into spicy Spanish compositions on Oct. 22 in Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at Frederick Community College (FCC). The concert will include the world-renowned España Rhapsody for Orchestra by Emmanuel Chabrier.
Also on the setlist is one of the most popular Mexican contemporary classical compositions, Danzón No. 2, by Arturo Márquez. Selections from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen (based on the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée) and Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s opera La vida breve will also be played.
Guests are in for a treat when violinist and FSO concertmaster Alyssa Boxhill will perform her second solo with the Symphony. She’ll be playing Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole in D Minor, Op. 21.
A Mannheim Steamroller Christmas
Join the FSO on Dec. 10 at FCC for a Christmas extravaganza. We will feature 11 holiday selections from Chip Davis’ mega-popular Mannheim Steamroller as well as J.S. Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.
Guests will indulge in a special performance by FSO’s Associate Conductor Andrew Rosenfeld and the Frederick Camerata as they will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Concert for Two Cellos in G Minor, RV 531, with Tom Mitchell and David Howard as cello soloists.
The Symphony will follow with Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival and Bob Cerulli’s Holiday Pops Sing Along.
Symphonic Pipes at Hood College
Hood College, an independent liberal arts college in Frederick, welcomes the Orchestra for the first time for our primary spring concert on Mar. 19, 2017.
This concert will feature Rosenfeld and the Camerata musicians performing selections from Serenade for Strings by Pytor Tchaikovsky and Josef Rheinberger’s Concerto No. 1 in F major for Organ.
The FSO will close with George Frideric Handel’s Organ Concerto in G Minor, HWV 289, and Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Organ, conducted by Maestro Glenn Quader.
Romanian Rainbow
On May 6, 2017, join the Symphony as we will play Romanian native George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A Major, Op. 11. The Camerata will treat guests to Dances of Transylvania and Romanian Folk Dances by Béla Bartók, and the FSO will follow by performing Rainbow Body by Christopher Theofanidis.
During this concert, the Frederick Symphony Orchestra will be showcasing the extraordinary talents of the to-be-determined Young Artist Competition winner, who will play his or her choice of composition before intermission.
Forbidden Love
On June 17, 2017, the FSO will play our final masterworks season concert to celebrate romance across timeless stories from movies and Broadway.
We’ll start tugging at heartstrings with The Titanic Medley by James Horner, followed by selections based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This will include Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet (also known as A Time for Us) by Nino Rota and Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture by Tchaikovsky.
To close the show, we’ll perform selections from Forrest Gump by Alan Silvestri and Calvin Custer, Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Custer, and Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.
This Anniversary season is going to be phenomenal, and we don’t want you to miss out. For more information about season and individual concert tickets, pricing, and seating arrangements, visit MDTix.
